A spelling bee is a contest / game to put spelling skills to the test. When hosting a spelling bee, students are given words (usually with a varying degree of difficulty) that they must attempt to spell correctly out loud. This is usually in front of a moderator or impartial judge (the perfect role for teachers and teaching assistants).
